Updated Hugo’s full build.
Hugo (ZZZ) is one of the Ice characters with role. Hugo (ZZZ) is one of the S Rank characters in Zenless Zone Zero.
Hugo Build (ZZZ) is included in this guide, you can jump to Hugo Build (ZZZ) Here.
First, let’s talk about his Basic Attack. Hugo’s first three Basic Attacks deal physical damage, while the fourth and fifth attacks deal ice damage. During the fourth and fifth attacks, you can hold down the Basic Attack button to use a Charged Attack. While charging, Hugo’s Anti-interruption level increases, he takes 40% less damage, and the Charged Attack’s damage and Daze multiplier become roughly double that of a non-charged attack.
After performing any of the following actions, you can skip the first three Basic Attacks and directly chain into the fourth and fifth ice-damage attacks: Dodge Counter, Quick Assist, Ex-Special Skill, Defense Assist, and Ultimate. Additionally, the fourth and fifth Basic Attacks chained after these five actions can also be charged into a Charged Attack.
Next, let’s look at Hugo’s most important core passive in combat. When Hugo’s Chain Attack hits an enemy, or when Hugo himself puts an enemy into a Daze state, he gains a buff called “Dark Abyss Reverb” that lasts for 6 seconds. This buff has four effects:
From this, it’s clear that Hugo and Lighter (who can extend enemy Daze duration) are an excellent pair. If you have both Hugo and Lighter, you can team them up.
After triggering Totalize damage, the enemy’s Daze state will immediately end. However, based on the remaining Imbalance time when Totalize was triggered, the enemy’s next Daze value will be partially pre-filled. For every second of remaining Daze time, 5% of the Daze value is filled, up to a maximum of 25%, which helps to trigger the next Daze state faster.
These are the four effects of the “Dark Abyss Reverb” buff. Additionally, while his Ex-Special Skill won’t trigger Totalize against non-Daze enemies, it naturally increases the Daze value accumulation rate by 20% against such enemies. So, if his energy is about to overflow, you can also consider using his Ex-Special Skill on non-Imbalanced enemies.
Finally, Hugo has an additional ability: When there are other Stun-type or same-attribute teammates in the party, Chain Attacks deal 15% more damage, damage against normal enemies is increased by 35%, and Totalize deals 40% more damage. If his Ex-Special Skill triggers Totalize on a normal enemy, it restores an additional 20 energy (this effect can trigger once every 30 seconds).
As for Hugo’s combat rotation, it’s very simple. First, use a Stun teammate to push the enemy into the Daze state. Then, switch to Hugo via Chain Attack and quickly use his Ultimate or Ex-Special Skill to trigger Totalize damage.
After that, you can switch Hugo back out and let other Stun teammates continue breaking the enemy.
Of course, if Hugo still has nearly full energy after triggering Totalize (close to overflowing), you can opt to use his Ex-Special Skill again to build more Daze value and avoid wasting energy. Alternatively, you can chain into the fourth and fifth Basic Attacks after Totalize to further increase the Daze value.

Terminating Verdict
Hugo (ZZZ) Core Passive
When Chain Attack: Trick of Fate hits an enemy or Hugo’s attacks Stun an enemy, Hugo gains the Dark Abyss Reverb state for 6s, and repeated triggers reset the duration. During this state, Hugo’s CRIT Rate increases by 12% and CRIT DMG increases by 25%.
When there are 1/2 Stun characters in your squad, Hugo’s ATK increases by 25/75//50/150//80/240//120/360//180/540//270/810//300/900.
When the Finishing Move of EX Special Attack: Soul Hunter – Punishment or Ultimate: Blaspheme hits an enemy while they are Stunned, it triggers the Totalize effect, increasing the DMG Multiplier of the skill’s Finishing Move by 500%/583%/667%/750%/833%/917%/1000%. Additionally, the Totalize effect further increases the skill’s DMG multiplier based on the remaining Stun time of the enemy when triggered: for each remaining second of Stun time from the portion that is less than or equal to 5s, the skill’s DMG multiplier increases by 140%/163%/187%/210%/233%/257%/280%; for each remaining second of Stun time from the portion between 5 and 15s, the skill’s DMG multiplier increases by 50%/58%/67%/75%/83%/92%/100%. The total increase can raise the skill’s DMG multiplier by a maximum of 1700%/1979%/2272%/2550%/2828%/3122%/3400%.
After Hugo triggers the Totalize effect, the enemy’s Stunned state will immediately end. Based on the remaining Stun time at the moment Totalize is triggered, a certain amount of Daze will be accumulated. For every second of Stun time remaining, 5% Daze is accumulated, up to a maximum Daze equivalent to 25% of the enemy’s maximum Daze.
When EX Special Attack: Soul Hunter – Punishment hits an enemy, if the enemy is not Stunned, the Daze accumulated by the skill increases by 20%.

The percentage indicates the performance of the Mindscape in Damage boost to Hugo (ZZZ).
M1
Vivian gains 1 Guard Feather for every 4 Flight Feathers consumed. Enemies affected by Anomaly status take 16% increased damage from all elemental Anomaly effects and Disorder damage. This effect stacks additively with the 12% Anomaly damage bonus from Core Passive of Vivian, resulting in approximately a 12.7% personal damage increase for Vivian.
M2
Vivian’s Anomaly Build-up Rate increases by 25%, and the target’s All-Type Resistance is reduced by 15%. This provides roughly a 16% damage increase for Vivian.
M3
This MC provides approximately a 0.69% damage increase for Vivian.
M4
Vivian receives a 12% ATK boost, and her Plunging Attacks and Off-field Attacks now always critically hit. Vivian starts battle with 5 Guard Feathers, which optimize her rotations. This MC results in about a 16.2% damage increase.
M5
This MC offers about a 0.82% damage increase for Vivian.
M6
Vivian gains a 40% Ether DMG boost. Using Ex-Special now refunds 1 Flight Feather, and her Plunging Attack’s AoE is significantly expanded while consuming all Guard Feathers. On hit, it triggers a special Abloom attack dealing damage equal to consumed Guard Feathers × standard Abloom DMG (5× at max stacks). This results in approximately a 36.4% damage increase.

If we take the Signature W-engine as the 100% benchmark for comparison, the best-performing alternative is Evelyn’s W-engine “Heartstring Nocturne”, which reaches 89% of Hugo’s Signature W-engine’s effectiveness. Next is Ellen’s Signature W-engine “Deep Sea Visitor”, which increases the wielder’s crit rate by 10% when Basic Attacks hit enemies, reaching 84% of Hugo’s Signature W-engine’s performance. However, if you want to run a quick-swap playstyle with “Hormone Punk”, you won’t benefit from this crit rate boost, causing its value to drop.
“The Brimstone” requires stacking, but Hugo needs to switch frequently to enable Stun effects—especially in a Hugo-Qingyi team, where Hugo’s on-field time is reduced, making it harder to maintain stacks.
Among 4-star W-engines, the only decent option is the Battle Pass W-engine “Cannon Rotor”, which reaches about 80% effectiveness. The other 4-star W-engines perform significantly worse, so they are not recommended here.

The highest-performing 4-pc set is Hormone Punk. However, equipping Hormone Punk severely limits Hugo’s flexibility in battle, so for daily farming, it’s better to use Woodpecker instead. This allows Hugo to freely use his Ex-Special Skill for grouping enemies and other utility.
The difference in damage between Woodpecker (2-stacks) and Hormone Punk is only ~4%.

First, let’s talk about the double Stun team. Lycaon and Lighter are highly compatible with Hugo. Both of these Stun characters can follow a quick-swap playstyle to build Daze, allowing for fast rotations and more Totalize triggers. In terms of buffs, Lycaon can reduce enemies’ Ice Resistance (RES) and increase the Daze multiplier. Meanwhile, Lighter not only lowers Ice Resistance and boosts teammates’ Ice Damage but also extends the duration of enemies’ Daze state, making him extremely synergistic with Hugo.

Qingyi can trigger her core passive when the team includes Attack Character, so she can also pair with Hugo. However, Qingyi spends a lot of time on-field, so for the third slot, it’s recommended to choose a quick-swap Stun character, such as Koleda.

Additionally, because Astra Yao’s buffs are very strong, even if a single Stun setup results in less Attack bonus, the actual final damage output remains high.
