Ellen is one of the Ice characters with role. Ellen is one of the S Rank characters in Zenless Zone Zero.
Ellen Build is included in this guide, you can jump to Ellen Build Here.
With excellent single-target and AoE capabilities, a unique Ice enchantment damage mechanism, and a shark tail, Ellen is the first limited character and a powerful all-rounder covering all damage output dimensions. She is an all-rounded Ice Main DPS. Compared to other Attack characters, Ellen has a relatively complex but very powerful DMG increase stacking buff mechanism, which allows her to stack buff through specific moves and finally consume those layers to enhances damage of Basic Attacks. The stacking methods are diverse and efficient, and most of her moves do not require energy, making it easy to use her effectively.
In terms of data, Ellen has the highest DPS among all Attack characters available during game’s launch. Her Basic Attack P3 and Ex Special also has a good attack range and slight crowd control ability, making her perform well both in single-target and AoE scenarios. When not using the Signature W-engine weapon, both Ice DMG and Critical Rate are significantly increased, giving her a huge advantage over other weapons. Currently, Ellen has dedicated support like Soukaku, so she doesn’t lack in ATK and focuses more on maximizing Ice DMG and Critical Rate. For Ellen from M1 to M5, the differences in Ice DMG and PEN ratio are not significant, but for M6 Ellen, the PEN ratio benefits surpass Ice DMG.

As Ellen is a Main DPS, her both Crit, PEN Ratio, Atk & Ice Dmg are her main stats.
Deep Sea Visitor is currently the most suitable S-Rank W-engine for Ellen as this is of Ellen’s signature W-Engine. It increases Ellen’s Crit Rate. With an extra passive effect of Ice DMG boost. The Brimstone is best second choice if you don’t have Deep Sea Visitor.
Cannon Rotor is a A-Rank W-Engine also provides a substantial amount of Crit Rate, its active effect allow Ellen to deal extra damage on enemy on Crit every 8s. Starlight Engine has special ATK buff in battle which make it become suitable to all Attack-type characters.
In the early stages of the game, you can use [Lunar] Pleniluna & [Lunar] Decrescent as transitional options.
The percentage indicates the DMG comparison relative to the Disk Drive set marked with 100%.

Sub Stats
The best 4 pcs set is Polar Metal which increase Basic Attack & Dash Attack, with additional damage boost after enemies are Freeze or Shatters caused by Ice element. For the remaining slots, you can use 2 pcs Woodpecker Electro.
Another viable option is 4 pcs Hormones with 2 pcs Woodpecker. The overall DMG is more or less the same with the first Disk Drives set.
For main stats, slot 4 uses Crit Rate. The reason of why not choosing Crit DMG is because Ellen’s core has already provdies a lot of Crit DMG. But you need to pay attention that if using Ellen’s signture W-engine – Deep Sea Visitor, the Crit Rate on character interface must not be exceeding 80%(for higher refined W-engined, this 80% borderline is even lower). For Slot 5, choose Ice DMG Bonus or PEN Ratio. And choose ATK% for slot 6.
For sub-stats, both Crit Rate or Crit DMG is essential to Ellen, Need what I mentioned in previous paragraph, pay attention on Crit Rate if using Ellen’s signture W-engine – Deep Sea Visitor.

Stun
Ellen and Soukaku is a definite core pair. While Lycaon can be a Stun-role during Damage period.
Lycaon can be replaced by other Stun-role agent like Koleda or Anby at the beginning as transitional options.
For Bangboo choice, Sharkboo will be the team’s first priority, while Penguinboo takes the second place. Sharkboo can boost Ellen‘s Energy Regen.
Soukaku‘s unique buff is her Frost Banner. While Soukaku transit to “Fly the Flag”, Soukaku can be boosted in Attack and Ice DMG. When Fly the Flag hits an enemy, Reactive Assist can be triggered unconditional. If next agent is swtiched under Reactive Assist, the Attack and Ice DMG buff will be transferred to the next agent, in this scenario, will be Ellen. However Ellen and Soukaku is not that tanky, it is advised to have Lycaon or other Stun-role agent such as Koleda to be the attacker outside Daze period.
To keep it short, Lycona is to build up Daze period, when Daze period almost built up, switch to Soukaku for damage buff, then during Daze period Ellen to burst damage.

Ben has the slowest movement speed in the game, making him the worst mobility. However, Ben possesses the strongest survivability. Whether facing mobs or bosses, with his unique blocking mechanism, all attacks can be nullified. This gives Ben the unique role of a Defensive character, making him the most reliable team survival support.
The blocking judgment is quite lenient; as long as the hit occurs during Ben’s use of Special, the attack can be blocked regardless of whether the defensive action is completed. Holding the Speical button after initiating the block maintains the defensive stance, and pressing the Special button again triggers a counterattack. If energy is consumed, the block counterattack becomes stronger and provides a shield to the entire team based on Ben’s defense. In stages with strong enemies or requiring level challenges, Ben’s blocking mechanism can significantly improve team survivability. Regardless of operation, Ben’s damage contribution to the team is very low, but he has good performance in Fire Buildup.
Pros
Cons
As the only pure ranged character among the initial three characters, Billy’s core gameplay involves simple operation, flexible movements, and maintaining a safe distance from strong enemies. Billy’s combo is unique; the second half of his crouching shot can be infinitely extended by holding the Basic Attack button. Billy’s mechanism also increases the damage of this crouching shot. The output logic is straightforward, but the performance in terms of damage is quite poor, making Billy a character with a low ceiling, not suitable for extreme damage output challenges. However, with an extremely low operation difficulty and safe attack distance, Billy can still be a character to rely on during difficult stages.

Cons
In terms of speed of attack, Nekomata is undoubtedly the best in Zenless Zone Zero. With swift and light combos, instant skill execution, and unique wide-range Ultimate and QTE in the game, Nekomata excels. Te absolute advantage in speed and range grants Nekomata a distinctive combat style. Nekomata is positioned as a burst-type quick-swap main or sub DPS with an extremely agile playstyle.
