Update log : Updated Nekomata Pure Physical Team Bangboo.
Nekomata is one of the Physical characters with role. Nekomata is one of the S Rank characters in Zenless Zone Zero.
Nekomata Build is included in this guide, you can jump to Nekomata Build Here.
Nekomata in Zenless Zone Zero is a physical attack character who primarily relies on the Core passive skill [Dodge Counter] to trigger damage amplification. Additionally, having teammates of the same faction also increases the damage of Nekomata’s EX Special Attack.
Therefore, the EX Special Attack can be reserved for when the enemy is in a daze state.
Overall, Nekomata’s Basic Attack plays a significant role in battles, so it is recommended to prioritize maxing out the Basic Attack . The Special Skill and Ultimate should be leveled up closely behind. Finally, Nekomata’s Dodge Counter and Quick Assist should be prioritized for damage amplification, as their effectiveness is also notable. These can be maxed out towards the end of the skill upgrades.

For S Rank W-engines, Nekomata’s top recommendation is the signature W-engine, Steel Cushion. It directly increases Physical DMG by 20%, and attacks from behind get an additional 25% increase. Since attacking from behind is the style of Nekomata’s, maximizing this 45% boost is very easy. Besides this, Steel Cushion also provides Crit Rate.
Alternative W-engines include Starlight Engine or Cannon Rotor, which can be obtained from the battle pass. As a quick-switch character, Nekomata frequently uses Assist Follow-up, and with the Starlight Engine, she can temporarily boost her ATK before using Ex Special and switching to the next character. Additionally, the Starlight Engine provides a good ATK boost, enhancing Nekomata’s DMG. Another recommendation is the Cannon Rotor, which provides Crit Rate, ATK% and can deal 275% ATK as additional damage when a Crit Hit is triggered. If Nekomata is equipped with the Cannon Rotor, other equipment should aim to stack Crit Rate to ensure that she can consistently trigger the W-engine’s effect whenever she is on the field. Housekeeper is also a good choice as its level of refine doesn’t affect the DMG, so you can use R1 Housekeeper if you don’t have R1 S. W-engine, R5 Cannon Rotor or Starlight Engine.
For early game stage, all Attack-type B Rank W-engines are viable options and their performances are pretty close to each others.

Main Stats
Crit Rate = Crit DMG ≈ ATK% > PEN > ATK
Sub Stats
For Disk Drives, it is recommended to equip Nekomata with 4 pcs Hormone and 2 pcs Fanged Metal/Woodpecker/Puffer. The 4 pcs bonus grants a 25% ATK boost when Nekomata frequently switches to the the front.
For main stats, Slot 4 should be Crit Rate or Crit DMG, Slot 5 is best with Physical DMG Bonus. Slot 6 should have Energy Regen to increase the frequency of Ex Special usage. For sub-stats, prioritize Crit Rate and Crit DMG, ATK% is just slight worse than Crit, and then it’s PEN and Flat ATK.
There is also an unconventional build where Nekomata focuses on Physical Anomaly enhancements. In this setup, the Disk Drives would be 4 pcs Fanged Metal and 2 pcs Wookpecker, primarily leveraging the effect of the Fanged Metal 4 pcs set bonus, which increases damage by 35% when attacking enemies with physical anomaly ‘Assault’. The Wookpecker set provides a Crit Rate boost from the 2 pcs set. The main and sub-stat recommendations remain the same, but this build requires the Pure Physical team to stack Physical Buildup and include a character specializing in Anomaly Proficiency and Anomaly Mastery.

The physical team consists of Lycaon, Nekomata, and Corin. In terms of Bangboo, the S Rank choice is Butler first and Bangvolver second, while the A Rank Bangboo can be Sumoboo. In this lineup, Lycaon primarily creates Daze on-field. Nekomata can attack frequently through Assist Follow-up, using off-hand Ex Special and then returning off-field. Since Nekomata’s skill Daze multiplier is also decent, she can assist Lycaon in putting enemies into the Daze state faster. During this process, Nekomata can compensate for some DMG by performing small bursts by attack from the back of the target. When enemy is in the Daze state, it’s Corin’s turn to come on the field. Corin’s Ex Special, with various buffs, deals considerable damage. Therefore, during the enemey’s Daze period, after Lycaon applies the vulnerability debuff, Corin can come on the field and use Ex Special to deal massive damage.
In terms of team passives, Lycaon and Corin belong to Victoria Housekeeping Co., while Corin and Nekomata share the same attribute, which successfully triggers all characters’ team passives. To summarize, this is a Daze-oriented team. Due to Nekomata’s presence, the strategy of switching Lycaon and Nekomata allows the enemy to enter the Daze state faster than in the Pure Ice Team, resulting in more frequent Daze periods. However, the damage output during a single Daze period relies almost entirely on Corin, which, in terms of quality, is not as good as Ellen in the Pure Ice Team.

If Lycaon is unavailable, consider replacing him with Billy to form a Pure Physical team. The best Bangboo is Bangvolver. Billy and Nekomata belong to the same faction, and Corin shares the same attribute with the other characters, ensuring all team passives are fully activated. Billy’s playstyle here is somewhat unconventional, as he needs to be the on-field character focusing on Physical anomaly. Therefore, equipment attributes should emphasize Anomaly Proficiency and Anomaly Mastery to increase the buildup speed of Physical Anomaly.
Nekomata and Corin’s roles remain largely unchanged as support and burst damage dealers. However, Nekomata’s equipment needs adjustment. Since Billy’s output rhythm shifts from focusing on Daze to balancing Daze and attribute anomalies, Nekomata’s equipment should be changed to 4 pcs Fanged Metal and 2 pcs Woodpecker to achieve both higher small bursts and Physical anomaly capability. Note that Billy’s anomaly efficiency is not particularly high, so if a better Physical Anomaly character appears in future, consider replacing him immediately.

The physical team consisting of Piper, Nekomata, and Corin is currently the best physical team. Piper handles stuns and deals Anomal Buildup, while Nekomata uses Quick Assist for damage output. During the Daze period, switch to Corin for burst damage.

Soukaku’s attack actions are slow and lack mobility, giving Soukaku no advantage in rapid fight. However, his unique Banner skill transfers the attack boost effect to teammates and increases the whole team’s Ice DMG, making Soukaku a highly versatile Ice-type attack support and the best partner for Ellen.
Pros
Cons
Rina’s unique mechanism of providing buffs with her doll on the field, combined with the dual influence of her core passive and team passive, allows her to offer the team various support such as PEN Ratio, increasing Shock duration, and increasing Shock DMG. Moreover, since Rina’s abilities are related to her doll, we don’t need to put Rina on-field. This makes her a comprehensive support character who spends most of her time off-field.
Pros
Cons
Grace is the core character responsible for the crucial Electric buildup in the Shock team. With high frequency, and high buildup efficiency skills, she can trigger Shocking in the shortest time, making her the absolute core of the Electro team, providing high-frequency Electro buildup for the whole team.
