Similar to the Witch, the Sorceress is an INT-based class positioned close to the top of the passive skill tree. This placement provides her with convenient access to elemental damage, spell damage, energy shield, cast speed, and additional related attributes.
While the Sorceress doesn’t have a unique weapon like other classes, her main focus is on Elemental Spells. In the gameplay showcase, she wields a Staff, but it’s likely that she’ll also have access to other weapon types, such as Wands.
With significant updates on the way for spellcasting weapons, let’s take a closer look at what’s in store.
In Path of Exile 1, every weapon had a standard basic attack, though it was rarely used by players. Path of Exile 2, however, is making notable changes to this setup for caster weapons, such as wands and staves. Instead of a basic attack, these caster weapons will now come equipped with a no-cost spell that automatically replaces the standard auto attack. This means that even when out of mana, spellcasters won’t need to resort to close-range strikes; they’ll have the option to unleash spells like fireballs from a distance, staying true to the Sorceress’s fantasy as a long-range caster.
In addition, the Sorceress gameplay preview introduced the new Dual Specialization system, which provides a flexible approach to elemental damage. Unlike Path of Exile 1, where characters typically concentrated on a single damage type—be it Fire, Lightning, Cold, or Chaos—Path of Exile 2 will enable more versatility. Through a new weapon-swapping feature, players can have two different weapons, each tailored to a specific elemental or damage type. In the Skill Gem screen, each skill can be assigned to a specific weapon, allowing players to switch between them smoothly as they use different abilities. Although there’s a slight delay when swapping weapons, certain skills can be assigned to both weapons if there’s no performance difference.
The Skill Gem interface now includes an option at the bottom right to assign each skill to either Weapon Set 1 or Weapon Set 2, making it easy to manage your setups.
Moreover, the Dual Specialization system goes beyond weapon setups. Players can invest in two separate passive skill trees, optimizing their builds even further. As different skills are activated, the game will automatically switch to the appropriate passive tree setup, helping maximize damage and efficiency. This dual setup isn’t exclusive to the Sorceress; all characters in Path of Exile 2 can use the Dual Specialization system, allowing players to explore new ways of enhancing their gameplay experience.

While specific details about the Sorceress’s Ascendancy Classes are still under wraps, it’s confirmed that she will have three distinct options to choose from. Given her focus on elemental magic, there’s a possibility that the Elementalist—a Witch Ascendancy focused on elemental spells in Path of Exile 1—might make a return for her.
The potential for unique Ascendancy abilities is broad. One path could enhance raw damage, while another might prioritize inflicting elemental ailments, or perhaps even grant more control over elemental effects.
As more information becomes available, we’ll keep this section updated with the latest on the Sorceress’s Ascendancy options.
Overview of Path of Exile 2’s Skill System
Path of Exile 2 introduces a unique approach to character abilities, setting it apart from traditional action role-playing games. Instead of skills being tied to specific classes, they are represented as items called Skill Gems that can be socketed into your character’s Skill Gem page. This innovative system allows any class to use any skill, providing immense flexibility and customization in building your character.
Disclaimer: The information in this guide is accurate at the time of writing and will be updated post-launch to remain current.
For those familiar with Path of Exile 1, the Sorceress will feel somewhat familiar, as numerous skill gems are returning. These returning skills are organized under the “Elemental” tag, fitting well with her focus on elemental magic.
