Path of Exile 2 (PoE2) introduces a variety of game modes and leagues designed to cater to different playstyles, from casual trading to intense solo challenges. Here’s a breakdown of each game mode and league type to help you pick the best option for your playstyle.

1. Standard Mode
This is the default game mode in PoE2. It offers the full gameplay experience without additional restrictions. Players can trade items, join parties, and freely interact with others. Best for those who enjoy trading, social play, or a more casual experience.
2. Hardcore Mode
In Hardcore mode, players have only one life; if your character dies, they are transferred to Standard mode. This mode emphasizes high-stakes gameplay and careful decision-making. Best for players seeking a high-risk, high-reward experience or who want to test their survival skills.
3. Solo Self-Found (SSF) Mode
In SSF mode, players are entirely self-reliant, with no trading or party play. All loot must be earned solo, making it ideal for a more self-contained and personal gameplay experience. Best for solo players who prefer independence, enjoy the challenge of self-sustaining progress, or are focused on individual achievement.
4. Hardcore Solo Self-Found (HCSSF) Mode
Combining the strict rules of Hardcore with the self-reliance of SSF, HCSSF is the most challenging game mode in PoE2. If your character dies, they will shift to regular SSF. Best for hardcore enthusiasts who also enjoy solo progression without trading or outside help.
5. Ruthless Mode
While originally part of PoE1, Ruthless mode drastically reduces item drops and ramps up game difficulty, creating a more demanding and minimalistic experience. Best for those looking for an extreme survival experience with limited resources.
Please take note that players can migrate their characters from SSF to Standard at any point, with or without items. In Hardcore modes, migration to Standard requires character death, adding an extra layer of decision-making to item transfers.
PoE2 includes Leagues, which are seasonal, themed gameplay modes that introduce unique mechanics and fresh content every few months. Here’s what to expect from these leagues:

Leagues are seasonal content updates that introduce new challenges, mechanics, and rewards. These fresh-start leagues attract most of the player base and offer a chance for everyone to begin anew. During a League, all players start with zero progress, creating an entirely fresh economy and level playing field.
For each League, variations of the core modes are available. For instance, a new league called “Affliction” might offer the following options:
Leagues offer exclusive, limited-time content and rewards, allowing players to try new builds, mechanics, and gameplay experiences. Once a League ends, characters are transferred to corresponding eternal modes, either Standard or SSF, allowing them to continue growing within the game’s broader economy.
Leagues and Game Modes in PoE2 provide something for everyone, whether you’re a solo survivalist, a dedicated trader, or a hardcore competitor. Choose the experience that suits you best and dive into the world of Wraeclast with a fresh start every season!
